DISCOVER CIRCULATION FANS

Ventilation of livestock barns

To maintain a suitable environment in a livestock facility, it is necessary to consider the following parameters: temperature, air humidity, air speed, and air quality.

The values of these parameters will depend on each animal species, their size, and whether they are young or adult. In this case, we will provide general guidelines for livestock operations.

One very important point that often causes confusion is the difference between ventilation and cooling. Many people think these two terms mean the same thing, but that is not the case.

Ventilation means renewing the air and should always be done to avoid high concentrations of harmful gases. Cooling, on the other hand, means lowering the temperature and should only be done when a certain critical temperature is exceeded.

How to keep a pig farm well ventilated?

To ensure proper ventilation, the following factors must be taken into account:

  • Temperature: This is perhaps the most important factor in a livestock facility. If the temperature is too low, animals will need more energy to maintain their body temperature, which will increase feed consumption. If the temperature is too high, animals will try to lower their body temperature by eating less, which will result in lower meat production.
  • Relative air humidity: This factor is related to ambient temperature. Average values should be between 60% and 80% humidity. Air humidity above 80% is harmful to animals.
  • Air speed: This factor is related to ventilation for animals. Air speed depends on the airflow required for proper ventilation of the facility. To achieve good ventilation, each animal must occupy a certain surface area. If this surface is too small and animals are overcrowded, proper barn ventilation will not be achieved.
  • Air quality: To ensure good air quality, maximum concentration levels of certain gases must be controlled. The maximum concentration of each gas will be determined by the laws of each country, so you should consult them for your facility.

Animal farms produce various harmful gases that affect both animals and facilities. To control the concentration of these gases, it is necessary to install ventilation fans for livestock facilities to ensure proper air renewal, replacing harmful gases with clean air.

Fans for Horses

Inhaling small amounts of dust can cause inflammation in the horse’s respiratory tract. In addition, it has been shown that the concentration of dust particles, mold, and pollen is higher in areas with poor ventilation, potentially causing serious problems for both horses and people.

To avoid these issues, it is necessary to have a ventilation system for stables. This system may consist of ceiling fans for stables or circulation fans.

Fans for Cow Barns

In the case of dairy cow farms, it is very important to maintain an appropriate temperature to achieve optimal milk production.

To achieve the right temperature, large fans alone are not enough. As mentioned earlier, ventilating the air prevents the buildup of harmful gases, but it does not lower the temperature. Therefore, installing fans for livestock barns is not sufficient; a cooling system is also necessary.

To achieve the optimal temperature range between -10ºC and +30ºC for dairy cattle, it is necessary to install cooling systems for barns. This way, high indoor temperatures can be avoided during summer.

To improve barn cooling, the use of destratification fans is recommended. This type of fan helps mix different air layers and reduces energy consumption.

Forced Ventilation for Poultry Farms

Ventilation for poultry houses follows the same principles as ventilation for horses, pigs, or cows described above. However, there are some differences in air ventilation due to the type of facilities, the size of the hens, and the gases they produce.

To achieve good ventilation, it is important to distinguish between winter and summer ventilation:

  • Winter ventilation: Minimum ventilation should be maintained to remove harmful gases from the facility.
  • Summer ventilation: Ventilation should be increased to remove harmful gases and evacuate excess heat. Additionally, cooling devices should be used to maintain an optimal temperature for the animals.

Farm ventilation can be achieved through two methods:

  • Natural ventilation: This is an ineffective method suitable only for small facilities, as the air renewal is poor. Furthermore, good facility design is required to achieve natural ventilation, and it cannot cope with sudden temperature changes.
  • Mechanical or dynamic ventilation: This is the most commonly used and far more effective than natural ventilation. Ventilation is carried out by circulation fans that enable a greater air exchange.

To ensure good ventilation, clean air must be introduced from the top and air extraction should be done from the lower part of the facility.

Poultry fans can be classified by their diameter, as a larger diameter allows for a greater airflow capacity.

The required airflow for good ventilation will depend, among other factors, on the respiratory rate of each type of animal.

Fans for Laying Hen Farms

In laying hen farms, it is essential to maintain a temperature between 6°C and 24°C. This ensures the highest productivity from each laying hen.

To achieve these temperatures and prevent heat stress, it is necessary to have a cooling system for the farm, in addition to installing several fans for laying hens to eliminate the gases produced by the animals.

Fans for Broiler Chicken Farms

In the case of broiler chickens, their optimal temperature ranges between 13°C and 35°C, depending on the age of the chickens.

As with all farms, it is necessary to install fans for poultry farms. This ensures that the air remains free of harmful gases that could make the animals sick.

Fans for Turkey Farms

The optimal temperature for turkey farms depends on the age (in weeks) of the turkeys. They require a higher temperature during the first weeks of life, and this temperature decreases as the weeks go by.

Their optimal temperature ranges between 12°C and 24°C. Therefore, it is necessary to install an avian cooling system, especially during the summer months.

Poultry farms produce a lower amount of harmful gases, so installing ceiling fans for farms is sufficient to ensure proper ventilation.

Textile Industry Ventilation

In the textile industry, like in other industries, many harmful gases are produced. In this case, they are mainly due to the products used for dyeing the clothes.

To evacuate the contamination present in the air, various types of fans can be used. Industrial ceiling fans, portable industrial fans, or circular industrial fans. Each of these fans has advantages over the others, so the choice of one or the other will depend on your installation.

If a temperature reduction is needed, industrial air conditioning can be used. Installing sandwich panels is also a good solution, as they help with thermal insulation and reduce electricity costs.

Ventilation for Winemaking Facilities

In winemaking facilities, it is essential to maintain a controlled environment for the proper preservation of wine. An adequate ventilation system helps maintain temperature, humidity, and air quality within ideal limits.

Ventilation must be controlled to avoid the accumulation of carbon dioxide and other gases. Additionally, the entry of dirty air should be prevented, as it could alter the wine’s flavor.

The fans used must be capable of generating a constant airflow without causing temperature fluctuations, which could negatively affect the product’s quality.

Ventilation for Greenhouses

Another facility where ventilation can also be used is in greenhouses. The ventilation is very similar to the ventilation used in industrial buildings, but it must be adapted to the needs of the cultivated plants.

For ventilation in greenhouses, it is necessary to install air circulators for greenhouses. The use of cooling systems for greenhouses should also be considered in case the cultivated plants require it.

Another option is to install misting systems to increase the humidity level in the air. This system consists of emitting small water droplets inside the greenhouse, which will generate humid air.

When using these types of systems, it is important to properly control the dew point to avoid excessive water vapor production.

Cannabis

Growing marijuana is not an easy task. Before you start growing it, you need to know some important points. The first thing you should know is that not all plants are the same, so each type will require specific care.

In general, for indoor cultivation, in this case, in a greenhouse, it is necessary to provide the plant with the correct amounts of water, light, and air.

It is very important to know the necessary power of the lights you need for your setup. As well as the amount of water the plants need. When choosing between greenhouse fans or destratifiers for greenhouses for marijuana cultivation, we recommend the latter, as they have a better and more efficient operation, and prevent the air from becoming stale and causing mold on the plants.

It is important to maintain an appropriate temperature for the plants, so you can install a heating system if necessary.

By taking the plants’ needs into account and meeting them, you can achieve a good marijuana production.

Warehouse Ventilation

Warehouse ventilation will depend greatly on the use or the products being stored. As a general rule, the installation of ceiling fans with light or even the use of portable fans in small warehouses will usually be sufficient.

The most common solution for warehouse ventilation is the use of industrial fans. However, to achieve a comfortable average temperature inside the warehouse, evaporative coolers can be used, which will lower the temperature to the appropriate level through water vapor, saving energy compared to other cooling systems. The amount of vapor emitted will depend on the cooling needs of the warehouse.

For example, in a cleaning products warehouse, it is very important to ensure the quality of the indoor air due to the emission of gases from these products.
